Adaptive Reuse & Renovations & Historic
Client: The African American Historical Task Force State of Kentucky (Historical Preservation)
Location: Covington, Kentucky
Project:
Involved taking two very large rooms a former library and classroom then transforming them into a dynamic interplay of spaces, which would be changeable. The unique design reflected heavy symbolism and scene abstraction of the middle passage journey, passing of pages in history through inevitable local stories and exhibits.
Details:
While providing spaces for changing displays the center design had to reflect the maximum degree of flexibility as possible. A display area that had four rotating walls could be removed and converted into a mini seminar room for lectures, slideshows, performances, etc.
Two terminus points represented major turning points in Kentucky African American history. Artwork, multi-media presentations, etc. would carry specific and relevant themes. The very large windows became a design challenge. A unique design came forth as a result, which provided significantly more functional display area.
The wavy stepped ceiling system, back lit represented waves from the ocean and the travel path across the Atlantic from Africa to the Americas.
